Teacher's Corner

Purpose: To help 6th through 8th grade students identify the link between good nutrition and athletic performance.
Objectives:
  • Students will select foods to fit into a training diet for sports
  • Students will explore fluid needs during physical activity training or game times.

Summary of Learning Activities:

How Much Water?
Students will answer questions on-line about their fluid needs for physical activity.

What About Sports Drinks?
This activity allows students to examine different kinds of sports drinks and decide if they are a good fluid replacement drink when they are exercising or during a game.

Planning a Healthy Diet
Students are given a list of possible food choices and asked to fill up the food guide pyramid with their choices. They will submit their food choices on-line and receive a report to tell them how well their selection fit into the food recommendations.

Supplemental Activities

The following are additional assignments you can use with your students.

Investigative Reporting
Students can write a news story about nutrition and sports. Invite a local news or sports reporter to talk to your students about key points in writing a good news story. Be sure the guest understands the nature of the student assignment.

Search the Net
Students may go on-line to find other sports nutrition tips. Have group discussions on their findings. Is the information reliable? Does the Internet advice advocate eating healthy foods before relying on supplements or special aids? What are the students' impressions about the truthfulness of the information they found?

Final Note

This unit requires more on-line reading. It goes a little deeper into the nutrients and why they are needed for good health. You may want to spend a little extra time reviewing the nutrients with the youth and showing them how they fit with food groups on the Food Pyramid.
