Growing Times

Even though you have been growing continually since you were a baby, there were certain times that you grew more quickly than others. You can expect to experience another period of rapid growth during the years from age 10 to 15 or 16.

Growth spurts, as they are called, happen during your pre-teen and teen years. But, there is no "normal" way to grow...growth spurts don't happen the same way for everyone. Boys and girls grow a little differently. For instance:

  Girls...

  • enter their growth years between 8 and 12 years of age.
  • usually reach their peak growth around ages 12 or 13.
  • may stop growing at ages 14 to 16.
  • have slightly more body fat than boys after they stop growing. This is normal.
  Boys...

  • enter their growth years between 10 and 14 years of age.
  • typically reach their peak growth around 14 or 15.
  • may still be growing into their early 20's

Because everyone grows at his or her own rate, you may just be entering your growth phase while some of your friends may be in the middle of theirs--or completely done growing! The bottom line is...it's okay to be who you are!!! Don't be too concerned about how you compare to your friends and school mates!!!
