Family Connections

Each of us is a unique individual. You may resemble one or both of your parents in some way, but you are also your own special person. The things that make you resemble your family members are called traits.

Your traits are the very special features that make you unique and separate from everyone else! Unless you are an identical twin, there is no one else in the world with features exactly the same as yours!

Your traits range from head to toe. You may have inherited your nose from your Mom, your toes from your Dad, your height may be from your Dad's side of the family, and your hair color from your mom's side of the family.

TIME OUT: Spend a little time discovering some of your inherited traits. Where did you get your eye color, your hair color? Can you roll your tongue? Check out your ear lobes? Who else in your family can do this? What other physical characteristics could be inherited?

Body build and frame size are also inherited from your parents. Some people are tall and slender while others are tall with a broad frame. Some people have a medium build. Others may be short with small features or they may be short with a squared off or "stocky look" about them.

Since each of us has our own special genetic background, you really can't compare yourself to your friends. Because we all have different color of hair or eyes or skin tones, certain colors will look better on you than other colors. Because we all have different body shapes, you may look better in some styles of clothing than others. And, because our bodies use food differently, you should get to know your own body and make choices that are just right for you.

Let’s have a little fun, now. Try an activity to create a very unique individual. You can choose the body type and several body features. If each person in your class or group creates his or her own person, you’ll see how each one is unique, different and special, just like you.

Pen Pal Activity -(optional)

Have you ever had a pen pal? A pen pal is someone who lives in another town and the only way that you could get to know them is by writing to them. Probably one of the first things a pen pal would want to know about you is what you look like!!! If you had to describe yourself to someone else, what would you say?
