Purpose: To allow 6th through 8th grade students an opportunity to learn about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the Food Guide Pyramid, and the Nutrition Facts Label.
Objectives:
  • Students will identify factors that influence their food choices.
  • Students will learn to use the three tools to help them make healthful food choices.
  • Students will be able to identify the five food groups and the proper number of servings and serving size from each group.
  • Students will apply their knowledge of the Dietary Guidelines, the Food Guide Pyramid, and the Nutrition Facts label to create a commercial for the purpose of teaching young children about the three tools

Summary of Learning Activities:

Making Choices Worksheet
Students will identify factors in their life that influence the things that they eat and why. The worksheet may me turned in as an assignment.

Pyramid Activity
Students will be asked to print an empty Food Guide Pyramid from the site. Students will keep a food record for one day. They will then place the foods they have eaten in the appropriate category on the Pyramid, and count the total in each group. Please help them to remember serving sizes and combination foods. They will then turn the assignment in to you.

Nutrition Facts Activity
Students identify the important parts of the label by sliding their mouse over the label to get some pop-up messages. You can also have several sample labels from food products available for students to do some further checking. The Nutrition Label Matching Game is an activity in which the students will put back the pieces of a Nutrition Facts Label much like a jig saw puzzle.

Supplemental Activities

The following are additional assignments you can use with your students as they explore their food culture.

Design-It Fun
Students have the opportunity to design their own commercial. The commercial should be designed to persuade young children to eat a fresh vegetable or fruit for a snack. If possible, the students should present their commercial to their target group. After the presentation have them fill out a comments report.
