The Nutrition Facts Panel is on most food
product labels. Use the Nutrition Facts Panel to help
choose foods for a healthful diet. Look over the Nutrition
Facts Panel by sliding your mouse over the panel on
the right to get a rough idea of how the nutrients
in a food contribute to your daily diet. Then, choose
a variety of foods to build a balanced diet.
Serving Size
Serving sizes listed on the Nutrition Facts Panel
are based on a typically eaten portion. The nutrition
information listed in the panel is for one serving.
The serving size on the label is not necessarily a
recommended portion size. You may eat more or less
than the size of one serving depending on your calorie
needs and activity level.
Amount per Serving
The amount per serving column tells you how much of
each of these nutrients a serving of the food contains.
Percent Daily Value
The percent of Daily Value (% DV) gives you an idea
of the nutrients found in one serving of food compared
to what should be eaten in one day. It is based on
a person who eats 2,000 calories per day. The daily
target would be to eat 100% Daily Value. For example,
if you chose a food that gave you 10% DV for protein,
you would need to get the other 90% DV in other foods
that you eat that day. The %DV for your diet may be
slightly higher or lower depending on whether you
need more or less than 2000 calories each day to meet
your energy needs.
Calories and Calories from Fat
Calories and calories from fat are important to look
at. We should have no more than 30 % of total calories
from fat. For example if you eat about 2400 calories
per day you shouldn't have more than 720 calories
from fat. In the food example one serving gives you
60 calories from fat.
